what I mean by tribes
Earth 2025 had many clans. We all played the same game, used the same forums, and understood the same rules. My clan was RAGE.
RAGE had around 150 members across twelve levels. We had departments for PR, IA, War, Strategy, and more. I commanded Outpost and eventually became one of the clan's three Emperors. When we negotiated a NAP (Non-Aggression Pact), formed an alliance, or prepared for war, I was making decisions for people I knew as "us."
That is what I mean by a tribe. The larger game gave us a shared world. RAGE gave us loyalty, responsibility, rank, memory, and a boundary between our people and everybody else.

where I learned this
Rap taught me how belonging could appear without an org chart. The words somebody used, the rappers they respected, the battles they remembered, and what they considered "real" could place them inside a scene.
Years later, I tried to build some of this deliberately in Midas' Kingdom, my Discord community. I could create channels, ranks, titles, challenges, and scheduled activity. None of those things guaranteed that people would belong.
The group felt more real when members remembered what another person was working on, answered one another, and returned to continue a conversation. When every useful exchange had to pass through me, I had a community-shaped delivery job.
Gutenberg taught me where I need to be careful. Millions of people followed the page and shared books and quotes. That was a large audience with shared references. I would need more evidence before calling all of those people one tribe because following the same page does not automatically create a meaningful "we" between them.

what makes the group feel real
I look for the moments when membership costs something. A RAGE member could spend time helping a lower level, defend the clan in a forum, follow a war plan, or lose status after breaking an agreement. In a smaller online community, the cost may be remembering another person's problem, returning with help, or creating something the group can use again.
I also look at the roles people can earn. RAGE named them directly through ranks and departments. Other tribes produce informal explainers, defenders, historians, scouts, judges, and people who welcome newcomers. The roles inside a tribe show me what the group needs and what it rewards.

trails from here
- Types of tribes includes chosen, circumstantial, place, intimate, and belief-system tribes.
- The five language layers maps what members do, say, feel, and repeat.
- Tribe stacking looks at several true forms of belonging inside one person.
- Roles inside a tribe looks at the positions a group's rules make available.
I am still collecting examples. Worlds holds the broader environments where this belonging can form. Niches describes the smaller group or problem somebody chooses to focus on inside one of those environments.
